Description - This course deals with the treatment of the poor from late Tudor times to the middle of the 19th century. It begins with
the Poor Act of 1601 (The "Old" Poor Act), we then consider the two Settlement Acts of 1662 and 1697 and the later Acts designed to redress the balance
for the poor. We then go on to consider the effect of enclosure, the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the mechanisation of agriculture which together
produced great hardships. We conclude by examining the records of the Poor Law and where they may be found.
This course is the second in a series on the treatment of the poor. FR16 (Saxon times to 1600) and FR18 (1834 - 1940) are the other two.
