Description - This course covers the treatment of the
poor from the start of the Victorian era through to 1940. It examines
the Poor Act of 1834 (The "New" Poor Act) and the introducrtion of the
Union Workhouse with their attendant harsh treatment of the poor. In
particular it takes a brief look at the Battle Union. Finally details
are given about where the records can be found.
This course is the third in a series on the treatment of the poor. FR16 (Saxon times to 1600) and FR17 (1601 - 1833) are the other two.
